The Nature of The World Around Us
The World Around Us is a Self-Access course. You will not have lessons with a teacher. You need to engage with the course materials by yourself. Note that it is a very good idea to:
- Take part in course page Discussion Forums;
- Form a study pair with a study buddy; or find 2 or 3 study buddies and form a study group;
- Start looking at maps that are in English;
- Find Quizlets for vocabulary about the topics - see the corpus / thematic units below.

The World Around Us is assessed by a single examination towards the end of the Term.:

Aims of The World Around Us
By the end of The World Around Us you will be able to:
- Use specific skills to learn more vocabulary
- Demonstrate knowledge of a large number of words from the Target Word List
- Talk about the world more easily in English
The World Around Us CORPUS
The World Around Us consists of a large number of texts and target words. The texts are organized into thematic units.
- Continents and Countries
- Flora & Fauna
- Food
- Geographical Features
- Industry
- People, Population & Demographics
- Regions, Provinces & States
- Transport
- Resources
- School and University Study Subjects
From these texts students must prepare themselves for the examination (see the Sample Assessment) target words which students are responsible to learn.
The World Around Us Vocabulary Learning Skills
The World Around Us skills lessons are organized into seven distinct lessons, each one teaching a distinct sub-skill. These lessons will be covered in class, but will not be examined directly. They are aimed to be instead an aid for students to learn the words they need to pass the exam. The harder a student works on learning the skills, the greater their chance of passing the course.
