What is English Medium Instruction?
English Medium Instruction (EMI) is when a school or a university teaches courses or programs in English : “…. when non-language courses in for instance medicine, physics or political science are taught in English, to students for whom it is a foreign language….” (Hellekjaer, 2010, p. 11) ‘EMI is the use of the English language to teach academic subjects (other than English itself) in countries or jurisdictions where the first language (L1) of the majority of the population is not English’ (Dearden & Macaro, 2016, p. 456).
