Aims

  1. To prepare all new students (even ones who might be exempted without doing Prep.) for the EEE
  2. To introduce all Prep. students to the Prep. Program
  3. To prepare all students for the term-time use of the department’s Learning Management System Schoology
  4. To teach students specific, basic IT skills that will facilitate their learning of English more effectively

 

Course topics

  1. The start-of-year English Exemption and Placement Examination
    1. Familiarisation with exam content
    2. Familiarisation with exam format a. – the different exam sections / how a student can be exempted or gain credits for preferential placement
    3. Familiarisation with online exam procedures (via Schoology)

 

  1. The nature of the Prep. Program
    1. Familiarisation with the Handbook
    2. Introduction to people/activities

 

  1. Using IT for English study:
    1. Saving and organizing work in various places
    2. Emails, Schoology messages and other Schoology functions
    3. Using spreadsheets to record and learn vocabulary
    4. Using features of word processing documents Part 1
    5. Effective Internet searches
    6. Using features of word processing documents Part 2
    7. Creating presentation slides

 

The nature of the course

1.  Initial Orientation Guide

Under the tutelage of the course instructor students will become familiar with crucial elements of their new learning environment

2. Information & Advice

The course provides a forum for students to ask questions, both to check their understanding of the program with all its regulations, and to seek advice on how to proceed in the face of uncertainty or difficulty.

3. Using IT for English study

Students work independently; there are no classroom lessons. To receive credit for this component of the course, students must follow a detailed checklist of tasks.
