English for Mathematics

English for Mathematics

Aims:

English for Maths will give students an opportunity to strengthen their English skills in two important ways.

Firstly, students will learn, words that will help them when reading about/doing mathematics;

Secondly, students will be helped to see that many words that are used in mathematics are also used, with the same meaning, in more general English. All students in the Prep. Program will be exposed in Faculty to Mathematics courses through the medium of English, and will thus benefit from any familiarization that can be gained during the Prep. Program. Furthermore, a large number of words from mathematics are used in English to talk/write about many more things than mathematics. Thus, learning key Maths vocabulary will help students with their English more generally.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will recognize a large number of words that have meaning in the field of mathematics;

Students will be able to use a significant number of words that both have meaning in the field of mathematics and which are used more generally in English.
